How long does it take to become a Web Developer?

fredasita asked:

Was wondering how long does it take to become a web developer? Html/css/php/Mysql or html/javascript/css/Ruby On Rail/Mysql??

Can I do that in 8 months and be marketable? How many hours should I study per day to accomplish thar goal?

Hmm thats quite a lot of code start off with HTML and css then try php and so on. I would suggest studying and practicing with the codes at least 2 hours a day.

You could do it in 8 months no problem. I learned all that in a year of highschool. If I could learn it during highschool, you could do it if you just set aside 2-3 hours a day learning it.

Remember, if you are doing entry level stuff, you will be able to get away with just HTML, CSS, and PHP no problem. A large asset would be learning graphics design. Anyone who could enter the web developer field being a great graphical designer will be wanted.

I’d say you should be marketable in 8 months if you really stick with it. My advice, though, is to spend as much time as you can until you start to lose focus. At that point you hit the law of diminishing returns and then you get frustrated and stop liking it.

I would advise starting with learning HTML/CSS and some Javascript. You’re going to need Javascript regardless of whether or not you choose Rails or PHP. Generally you’re probably going to use Apache as your web server, then HTML/CSS/Javascript, then either PHP, Ruby (and Rails), or Java and then MySQL as your backend database.

One area that is fun is to check out the Google Maps APIs at or Yahoo’s Javascript libraries at. Both have great docs for Javascript and it gives you some fun things to try right away. They’re documented great which is always beneficial when you’re learning something.

As for CSS and HTML, check out A List Apart at and then start following their links to see how to best use CSS and HTML plus you’ll find some great examples of how to design your pages. At that point you can progress to picking a backend language such as PHP or Ruby and go from there.

Last thing…think of a problem you want to solve or a site you’d like to build and use that as your goal as part of the process. Then you’ll have something to show prospective employers that you built in your spare time. This shows initiative on your part and makes them more likely to hire you. That is definitely something I look for when hiring a web developer.

    Good luck!

Breakdown – assuming you spend 10-12 hours each day in learning, practicing and reading (online forums etc.)
HTML and XHTML: 2 weeks (1 weeks overlaps with CSS)
    CSS: 2-3 weeks (intermediate level)
JavaScript: 3 weeks (beginners – intermediate level)
    30+ page JavaScript tutorial -
PHP: 1-2 month (beginners to almost intermediate level)
    MySQL: 1 month (beginners level)
30+ page MySQL (SQL) tutorial -
Marketable – that’s difficult to guess..

Yes you can do it!!! Best of luck.
