Why Do People “Like” & “Follow” Companies on Facebook & Twitter?

Two separate studies have been released over the past week that show why people “friend” and “follow” brands on sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The first, from Google, looked at Facebook. The study found that 55 percent of Facebook users do not friend or “like” any brands on Facebook. Of those who do, 18 percent become a fan of one or two brands, 11 percent do so for three or four brands, 10 percent five to nine brands and just 6 percent ten or more brands. And why do they become fans?

25 percent to receive discounts and promotions
18 percent to show others they support the brands
10 percent because it’s fun and entertaining
8 percent to hear new info first

The second study comes from ExactTarget and surveyed Twitter users ages 15 and up. They found that:

38 percent of users follow brands to get updates on future products
31 percent to receive discounts and promotions
30 percent to get updates on upcoming sales
28 percent to get a “freebie”

The writing is on the wall. Your top business social networking priorities should be to offer discounts and promotions, and to keep users informed about product releases and other company news that will benefit the user. This does not mean announcing a new CFO, but rather a new product line, an update to an exisiting product or news about how your products can help improve consumers’ quality of life, for example.

Of course, discounts and promotions loom large. Build a value system with users by rewarding their loyalty with discounts and you are likely to see new fans and followers. And, don’t stop at promoting this strategy solely on networks – make sure your website provides links to your network profiles and informing users that, by becoming a fan or follower, they can expect discounts and promotions. As always, set a strategy including well-defined limits. After all, you don’t want to give away the store should a discount go viral.

FREE SEO? Shall I go ahead?

varna s asked:

Hey people!
Need your suggestion! I want to start a new website and I want to select an SEO company before I launch my site as one of friends has her own website and she told me that to get the best results its better to optimize the website before submitting it to any search engine (that jus bounced over my head). Now she is getting the SEO for her website from a company called Vedikas (Indian SEO Company). Initially they gave a FREE SEO pre-optimization report (15 pages pdf file) for FREE and my friend was very happy with the quality of the work. She made all the changes which Vedikas suggested her. Now, after 2 months, on an average her website is getting 1300 unique visitors daily. 9000 – 21000 hits per day. They are charging $425 / month for small business website. IS IT WORTH IT? I guess its worth the money as my friend is very happy with the company! Still, thought of asking you guys!

PLEASE HELP!!
Hey sorry people! I forgot to mention the SEO company’s website URL. its http://www.vedikas.com
About the HITS! The SEO company didnt promise any HITS! Its we who checked the website statistics ad found the HITS details.
Yea around 1300 – 1500 unique visitors daily. Is it a good number?

How often should I change meta tags in my site?

tom m asked:

I have a website, where I constantly add new information, so the site is changing. This is not everyday, but at least a couple of times per week. Newsletter, tips, etc, are put on the site. The content changes, but the subject matter does not. I want to keep the relevant in the search engine lists. How often should I update meta tags or does it matter since the subject matter does not change (same topics, new info)? Also, will changing meta tags too often “penalize” my site. I have never used a submission service because I was told they really don’t work. Any thoughts on this. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Internet Marketing Ideas and Rules for Craigslist.org

Craigslist Marketing Ideas

by Zeke Carnusio

Craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org) is a free online classifieds site with over 48 million unique visitors per month. Let me say that again: it’s free and 48 million people use it every month. Does it sound like a good place to promote your products and services?

Although thousands of companies use Craigslist very effectively, others just waste their time on it. What do the former companies know that the latter don’t? These are some tips that will help you get great results from the world’s top classifieds site.

Re-Post Your Ads Every Two Days
Old ads get pushed down as new ads are posted. People only click on the first ads, unless they’re searching for something specific. You can’t be at the top all the time because Craigslist won’t allow you to post the same ad every five minutes, but they do allow you to post it every 48 hours, so take advantage of it. Also, keep in mind the time your post your ad. If you post it at 2 a.m., chances are that very few people will see it.

Follow the Rules
You can’t post the same ad to two different cities, you can’t post the same ad more often than every 48 hours and you’re not supposed to create multiple accounts to post more often. Follow the rules. If you try to fool Craigslist, they’ll eventually catch up with what you’re doing and they’ll cancel your account.

Write Titles that Stand Out
Potential customers will see hundreds of listings and they’ll only click on a few of them. Make sure your title stands out. Some ideas:

* Ask a question, such as, “Have You Tried Every Hair Loss Product and Nothing Seems to Work? Hair Loss Treatment in Seattle”
* Use headline case.
* Use symbols, such as $, #, %, +, <, >, /, “, etc.

Use Keywords
In the previous example, I included the keyword “hair loss”, which is what people are likely to search for when looking for a hair loss product or treatment.

Address Your Ads to the Local Community
Note how in the previous example I mentioned that my treatment is available for people who live in Seattle. People like dealing with local businesses better.

Copywriting Is Everything
Given that your headline is great and that you got people to click on your ad, now it’s time to get them to take some kind of action. This is a 7-minute copywriting crash-course (http://www.theoutsourcingcompany.com/blog/internet-marketing/the-most-effective-7-minute-copywriting-course-ever/). Include testimonials, “before and after” pictures and any other kind of social proof you can think of.

Use a Soft Call to Action
Don’t blow it by asking people to buy your $1,000 gadget or hiring your expensive services in your ad. They don’t know you. Ask for a smaller commitment, such as requesting a free consultation, estimate, downloading a free report, videos, or whatever makes sense for your business. Capture their contact information, give them something of great value and then start marketing to them without being too pushy.

Test Everything
Every industry is different. Test everything, from headlines to marketing approaches, from ad copy to calls to action, and see what works for you.

Try Other Classified Sites Too
Although Craigslist is the 800-lb. gorilla, there are other classified sites that get a lot of traffic: USFreeads (http://www.usfreeads.com/) and Backpage (http://www.backpage.com/) are two of them.

Craigslist Isn’t for Everyone
As with any other kind of marketing, you need to measure your efforts. If you direct people to your site, use Google Analytics to track your traffic. If you ask people to call you, give them an exclusive coupon code so you can tell who’s coming from Craigslist. Then you need to calculate how much time you’re putting into Craigslist marketing, how much that time costs you and how much you’re getting in return. Finally, you need to determine whether your campaign is profitable and decide if you’ll continue marketing your business on Craigslist
